What is Tao?
Tao (pronounced Dow) means The Way or Path - the natural path and flow that underlies all life. The idea comes from ancient China and is beautifully described in the Tao Te Ching, a short but profound classic written over 2000 years ago by Laozi, a wise sage of ancient China, the Tao invites us to live in harmony with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.
A sage is a person of great wisdom who lives in Harmony with nature and the flow of life, guiding others through insight, compassion, and understanding. In Taoist philosophy, the Tao is the quiet wisdom of the seasons, the rivers, and the gentle rhythm of breath. It is not something we try to control, but something we allow ourselves to follow a way of living in harmony with nature, with others, and with our own true self.
The word Tao is also seen in texts as Dao.
The Word Tao or Dao and why its pronounced Dow
In ancient China, The Way was pronounced Dao (liked "Dow"). The spellings "Tao" and "Dao" came much later when Chinese words were written in English. Both are correct, but the sound Dao reflects the original pronunciation.

What is Sound Therapy?
Sound Therapy is only ever performed on a 1:2:1 basis and it is a therapeutic practice that targets specific needs. At The Art of Tao, sound therapy harmonises the principles of Chinese Medicine, blending the vibrational essence of sound with the body's natural energy system known as Qi. Each session works on the body, mind, spirit and soul, which are deeply interconnected and inseparable. Sound Therapy can help restore balance between these interconnected layers.
Everything in nature is vibration-our cells, organs, emotions, and thoughts carry their own resonance, always dancing with the rhythms of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, and the flow of Qi.
Harmony is health and an imbalance is the source of disease. Sound Therapy only works with this principle, using the natural language of vibration and frequencies to guide the body back into balance. Tuning Forks and instruments such as Gongs, singing bowls, drums, shakers and the voice create vibrations that travel deep within at cellular level. These vibrations act like ripples on water, moving through tissues, organs, and meridians. They release blockages where Qi is stuck, they soothe the nervous system, shifting us into deep rest, and they harmonise the Five elements, brining them balance to body, mind, spirit and soul.
Important to note that every living cell responds to sound, vibration, colour and light, all of which the Art of Tao works with. The body is not separate from sound-it is a resonant instrument constantly vibrating with life.
Qi responds to sound, frequencies and vibration helping to bring Qi back into tune.
What is a Sound Journey?
A Sound Journey also known as a Sound Bath is an immersive meditative experience where you "bathe" in sound, vibrations and frequencies that are created by resonant instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, chimes and shakers. Its primary purpose and focus is to guide you into deep relaxation, release stress, and to create calmness and rebalance.
Instruments are played in a continuous flowing sequence, creating a rich, enveloping sound journey experience.
Core Elements:
This is a passive experience where you simply lie down or recline comfortably, and with your eyes closed you let the sounds wash over you
This is usually offered in a group setting, though private nurturing 1:2:1 sessions are also available.
There is minimal interaction during a sound journey and the emphasis is solely on your experience of the sound. Where as a Sound Therapy session is a more intentional experience which is a targeted approach that is designed to support a specific health need
